Panchakarma is one of the most important therapeutic procedures in Ayurveda, designed to deeply cleanse the body, eliminate accumulated toxins (Ama), and restore the balance of the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Although the body naturally removes waste through sweat, urine, and stool, unhealthy lifestyle habits, poor diet, stress, and dosha imbalances can lead to toxin accumulation, affecting overall health.

Before the main Panchakarma therapies, patients undergo Poorvakarma (preparatory procedures), which include Snehapana (internal oleation with medicated ghee or oil), external oil massage, and Swedana (herbal steam therapy). These treatments loosen toxins and prepare the body for effective cleansing.

The five Panchakarma therapies include:

1. Nasya

Nasya involves administering warm medicated herbal oils or herbal drops through the nostrils to cleanse the nasal passages, sinuses, and upper respiratory tract. It helps remove excess Kapha, improves breathing, relieves sinus congestion, headaches, allergies, and supports mental clarity.

2. Vamanam

Vamana is a medically supervised therapeutic emesis (controlled vomiting) performed in carefully selected cases where excess Kapha has accumulated in the upper digestive and respiratory systems. This treatment helps eliminate excess mucus and is beneficial for certain chronic respiratory and Kapha-related disorders.

3. Virechana

Virechana is a therapeutic purgation therapy that removes excess Pitta and toxins from the liver, gallbladder, and intestines. It promotes healthy digestion, strengthens digestive fire (Agni), and supports conditions such as acidity, constipation, piles, skin disorders, and digestive irregularities.

4. Vasthy (Basti)

Vasthy is an Ayurvedic medicated enema using herbal oils (Sneha Vasthy) or herbal decoctions (Kashaya Vasthy). It is considered one of the most effective treatments for balancing Vata dosha and is widely used to manage constipation, lower back pain, joint disorders, neurological conditions, and women's health concerns related to Apana Vata.

5. Raktamoksha

Raktamoksha is a specialized blood purification therapy performed only when clinically indicated. It involves removing impure blood using methods such as leech therapy or other Ayurvedic techniques. This therapy is mainly used for selected skin disorders, localized inflammation, and certain vascular conditions.
